EFFA at the Nordic Hunting and Fishing Festival in Elverum (NOR)

First Russian instructors certified!

B. d. Bruin, W. Fabisch , Joakim Ericsson SWE, Igor Tyapkin RUS, Mikhail Zenkov RUS, Alexander Chernysh RUS, Tore L. Rydgren NOR and examiner S. Fuchs

Not less than ten candidates attended the EFFA Basic flycasting instructor exams on 9 August in Elverum(Nor). The exam took place at the same location as last year. The Nordic Fishing and Hunting Fair next to the fishing and hunting museum who was also the organizer of the show was the perfect place to meet for Scandinavians. The examiners Sepp Fuchs, Bas de Bruin and Wolfgang Fabisch were the examiners team at site. It was very tough this year because the wether was terrible. The heavy rain was a bit of a handicap but the people from the North seem to be quite used to it. At the end the examiners could welcome five new EFFA instructors in our team: Tore L. Rydgren NOR, Joakim Ericsson SWE, Alexander Chernysh RUS, Igor Tyapkin RUS und Mikhail Zenkov RUS. Alexander, Igor and Mikhail were the first Russians ever who passed world's most difficult fly casting instructor exam, so they were more than happy about that and shared some Vodka with the new friends. We are very happy about all our new instructors and want to thank the Norwegians for their hospitality. We will be back.

The Dutch Fly Fair at Fort Altena at Werkendam(NL) May 2008

The Dutch Fly Fair is back

On Saturday the 24 th and Sunday the 25 th a new Fly Fair was held at a very special location: Fort Altena at Werkendam. This old fortress dates back to 1840-1850 and was part of the Dutch ´waterlinie´ that was created to defend the heart of Holland . The fortress and the walls that belong to it have been rebuild recently. In the days up to the fair a lot of work and money was put into creating a Fly Fair atmosphere on the fortress. On the Friday we saw a handful of EFFA instructors (Bas, Sepp, Cees and Richard, with the help of well known fly tier Piet Weeda) busy with putting up the casting pool and the demonstration pontoon.

Because there would be a full program on the Saturday, it was decided to start early (9.00 hours) with the EFFA exam. Four candidates had put their names down for this, including two from Russia . Jupp Verstraten , Bas de Bruin and Sepp Fuchs were in charge of this exam and they were helped by Richard Verbeek . The casting pool was set up in an east to west direction. The increasing wind from the east, up to a wind force 5, followed these directions but made things far from easy. After some test casting and the arrival of the translator for the Russian participants, it was possible to start at 9.00 h with the exam. For most participants the wind turned out to be a major opponent, this was clear to see in the back casts whereby the line did not stretch out all the way to the back.

Excellent result

By the end of the morning it became clear that Waldo Kranenburg had learned a lot from the few mistakes he had made at the earlier exam in Schimmert. Unfortunately the other candidates failed on more than one cast. I am glad to say they will not surrender and will try again next year. Alexandr, Mihail and Folkert were of course saddened by the fact that they failed this test, but I am sure we will welcome them as EFFA instructors in the future. After a short break, we went to the theoretical and teaching part of the exam. Waldo past these parts successfully too and we could congratulate him with the result and welcome him as a new certified EFFA instructor. By the end of the day the certificate and badge were handed over to him officially on the platform in front of the main building of the fortress. Hereby we congratulate Waldo again with the excellent result of his exam.

The Dutch EFFA instructors have played a major part in putting EFFA more clearly on the map during this Fly Fair. During both days demonstrations as well as workshops were held. For this fair a special flyer was put together, Cees van Noord had a major part in this, and this flyer was well received by the public. A special feature was the demonstration on the Sunday by two soon to be instructors (Youri Arens, 9 years, and Bas ter Laak, 15 years). Under the guidance of Bas de Bruin they showed what it takes to receive the casting certificate of the VNV (Dutch Association of Fly Fishers).

EFFA Fly Fishing Meeting and exams at the River Ribnik in Bosnia 2008

Big party on the Ribnik river

On 9-11 May 2008, the EFFA Fly Fishing Meeting took place at Ribnik River in Bosnia . Our Bosnian friends really did a great job! They were supported by five warm and sunny days. What LGT Company was doing to make the spoiled European fly fishermen have a nice time in Bosnia , was incredible! The lodges are one of the best we can find in our tours. The river Ribnik, with the water not at maximum condition, reserved anyway big fishes and a lot of fun. It's really a beautiful river, a perfect answer to Slovenian Unec. Many mayflies had filled the air because of the warm weekend. The big stoneflies landed with rumour on the water, too. The exam's location was a huge meadow, perfect cut and decored with the EFFA tents and banners. On Saturday, an important workshop took place, with casting and tying demos. During the dinner, Alex presented the “ EFFA Guide Programme”, which is almost finished. Sunday, finally the certification took place under a nice sun and a light wind. The seven candidates were well prepared but very some were quite nervous.

At the end two very nice new friends passed: the Spanish Roberto Caldeiro and Manuel Iglesias. Keen salt water fishermen, they live at the Atlantic coast, where they often go fishing big tunas. Well-done and welcome!! Congratulations to the new instructors with the hope to see EFFA growing in Spain . Finally I cannot remark the big work of Alex and Ivan, who have promised a big surprise for the next year, too.

EFFA Meeting and exams at the River Ribnik in Bosnia 2007

The meeting in Bosnia could not have been any better and the organizers especially Mr. Talic and Mr. Vukovic as well as our instructors Ivan Dragoijlovic and Alex Ivanovic hereby get a big thanks from all of us. We stayed right at the river bank of one of the most wonderful spring creeks in Europe, the River Ribnik, with many other fly fishing possibilities nearby. However there was not much need to move somewhere else, the river was just too beautiful and the fishing for big browns and grayling was fabulous. Nevertheless we got to know that the fish there can also be quite tricky. So even for the hard core fly fishers among us the fishing was interesting enough. In the evenings we tasted the excellent local food, the tasty Bosnian vines and the local beer which was a little bit stronger(12,5% alcohol) than some of us were used, too. Besides that we enjoyed the talks with our new Bosnian friends who share our passion. The Bosnian guides and fly fishers do not only know how to fish their streams but also like to celebrate. It was great fun.

The exam and the fly casting demonstrations took place a little bit upstream from the lodge on a big field at the banks of the Ribnik where a large flycasting pool was set up. As we all know the EFFA instructor exam it the only exam adapted to the high European fly casting level and therefor much more difficult than any other instructor exam. So at the end there was only one candidate left who received the most sought-after instructor certificate. Patrik Wettergren from Sweden delivered a superb exam and is about to strengthen the EFFA team in Sweden now. Congratulations Patrik!

Dutch EFFA Meeting in Schimmert(NL)

The Dutch meeting in Schimmert ( Netherlands ) was a great success. In a beautiful surrounding of south Limburg we held this time our yearly meeting in the weekend from the 3 th till the 5 th of May. A special thanks from all of us to William van der Vorst and his team for the organisation. Most of us stayed at the Campsite Marevelt in Schimmert, this campsite has very good accommodation and a great lawn where William and his team build-up a large flycasting pool. The weather was great, too, so it couldn't be better.

Saturday 4 th May was set up for our instructor exam. We had the maximum of 8 candidates but so as we know the EFFA instructor exam is not so easy. It's the most difficult instructor programme but if you manage this level you can be proud to be an EFFA flycasting instructor. At the end of this long day two candidates received the instructor certificates. Ruben Groenendijk and Cees van Noord did the exam very well and therefore our congratulations to them. This made the Dutch EFFA team grow to 17(!) instructors and that is great for such a small country.

After this hard long day we went to the lodge for some drinks and a great buffet. Off course we held a little meeting after the buffet with our new instructors and had a nice brainstorm session about the future of us and this exam day. There is always room for improvement and maybe some of our spoken suggestions can be found in the future on our EFFA site.

This weekend was not only a weekend for the instructors but we invited everyone who was interested in fly-fishing and of course fly-casting, especially on Sunday. We offered free workshops and fly-casting demonstrations the whole day long.

Before we started with the workshop there was always a little casting demo for about 10-15 minutes. After that everyone was invited to join the instructors with the workshops for about another 30 minutes. We held workshops for the basic-cast, analyzing the double-haul, tips and tricks, distance casting, casting with double-handed rods, casting with shooting-heads and so on.

Every instructor was very busy that day. We did not only teach the visitors a lot we but we learned also from each other. And that is the true spirit!

The main aim of this weekend was to enjoy the day with our friends, with other instructors, the public and this great sport. We are looking forward to the next Dutch weekend in 2008.

Pescare 2007

The Pescare 2007 in Vincenza(I) was a great show with an enormous amount of visitors. EFFA was also present there with a stand and the two Master instructors Valerio Santagostino and Günter Feuerstein made sure that important messages were spread among the fly fishers in Italy:

EFFA will soon open its doors for all fly fishers not only for fly casting instructors and in the future all fields of fly fishing will be covered. The fist step was easily visible when the visitors were lining up for subscribing for the River Folla Alert(see conservation). The fly fishers were happy to see that a Eurpean fly fishing organisation now takes care about the environment on an international basis.

There were also two candidates trying to pass the EFFA instructor exam. At the end one of them, the Italian Michele Malagugini was happy to receive the EFFA certificate and patch. Flycasting demonstrations for single hand and double handed rods performed by Günter Feuerstein and translated by EFFA instructor Angelo Piller completed EFFAs representation at the show. It was a really great event and EFFA thanks all the visitors for the good communication.
